Postgraduate Courses in the UK

Postgraduate study in the UK follows the successful completion of an undergraduate degree. In rare circumstances where this is not the case, like an MBA or business course, a great deal of work experience relevant to the programme is needed as an alternative.

Postgraduate degrees in the UK last just one year compared to two-year degree courses offered in other countries, meaning students can save time, money and find a job much quicker.

Why study a Postgraduate degree in the UK?

A study by the Higher Education Statistics Agency carried out in 2013/14 showed that 86% of students who completed postgraduate degrees in the UK were in full-time employment following graduation, compared to 75% of undergraduate degree graduates.

  • Improve your career prospects

  • Part-time postgraduate courses means study can be shaped around your schedule

Types of Postgraduate degree

Taught courses generally last for just one year. Students will be assigned a tutor, and then weekly seminars and lectures will take place, divided into modules. Assessment will be via exam, dissertation or a project.

Research degrees will see students take much more responsibility for their work and schedule, basing their study around a substantial research project – often reaching up to 80,000 words – written as a thesis which then must be defended in an oral examination. The most popular research degree is a PhD, which can take up to four years to complete.

How much does a Postgraduate degree cost?

While course fees vary, the cost of living is something in your control when deciding in which part of the UK you wish to study. London is the most expensive part of the UK to settle in, with housing and travel significantly higher in cost than anywhere else in the UK. Postgraduate schools in the UK are far less expensive than graduate schools in the USA though, and study in the UK can be 30% to 60% cheaper than American equivalents.

In general, the average cost of a postgraduate degree in the UK for an international student is £12,500.
