Here are five tests some students may have to pass to study in the UK.
GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test)
To be accepted on a graduate management programme, you will have to take the GMAT. Skills such as analytical writing, problem-solving abilities, logical and critical reasoning are assessed.
This test is valid for 5 years and can be taken up to 5 times a year if you fail, while each attempt must be 16 days apart. GMAT scores are implied upon as the number out of 800 and used to compare candidates as the standard benchmark which is commonly higher than the average score for the top business school. An average GMAT Score is 540.
In India, around 29 centres offer this test at the fees of Rs. 16500 approx. and you will be able to view your score online using your date of birth to verify your access.
SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test)
For admission onto an undergraduate course, an SAT is taken to assess the students’ academic readiness in the field of reading, writing and mathematics. It is applicable worldwide and test scores are valid up to 5 years. In India, over 13,000 students sit in the exam that is conducted between the months of October November. Students have to pay Rs 3500 as the fees to take this test.
You can sit for the test as many times as you wish, but keep in mind that you may be judged by some schools on the basis of the scores in all the attempts. Aim to score: at least 2100/2400.
GRE (Graduate Record Examination)
Students who are applying to graduate and business schools for their Master’s degree or MBA have to take the GRE as an admission formality. In India, there is no specific date for the examination so students have to take a prior appointment for the closest GRE with fees Rs 12000 which is variable to USD exchange. One typical requirement in India to sit for the test is that the applicant should have a passport to be eligible for appearing in the test.
Students can take the GRE once every 21 days up to 5 times within a year. Paper delivered GRE can be taken as often as it is offered. Validity of scores is 5 years after sitting for the test. Aim to Score: 320.
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
Being a non-native speaker, your English Language will need to be assessed to study in an international academic environment. For that, you have to sit TOEFL, which is a standardised test to judge applicants’ English Language abilities.
The scores can be used by some immigration departments to issue residential or work visas as well. In India, the fees required to take the test is Rs 11,500 approx. The test is valid for 2 years. Aim to Score: 80-90.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
In countries where English is the native language, IELTS is used to assess the applicant’s language capability to study or work in a foreign environment. IELTS scores are valid for 2 years and are recognised by the international Government for immigration applications. In India, the fee for sitting in the exam is approx. Rs 11,100.
