The UCL Institute of Education (IOE) is ranked first in the world for education (QS World University Subject Ranking 2015 and 2014) and first in the UK for research strength (Research Education Framework 2014). Founded in 1902, the IOE established itself as a world-leading specialist education institution and in December 2014 became a School of UCL. As such, the Institute of Education is part of one of the world’s leading multi-faculty institutions ranked fifth in the world (QS World University Rankings).

Located in the heart of central London, the IOE is a global hub of ideas and debate in education and related social sciences and has a true commitment to research and teaching excellence. World-renowned academic staff conduct research for governments, ministries, schools and universities, meaning that the Institute’s expertise continually influences and shapes educational policy across the world.

The IOE is the number one choice for education professionals from around the world to develop themselves and their careers. IOE enjoy some of the highest employability ratings compared to all UK universities, with 93% of postgraduates in employment or further study six months after graduation. Students interested in graduate-level education and related subjects can choose from one of 60 renowned masters’ programmes or study a research degree at the UK’s largest education Doctoral School. Two full-time undergraduate programmes are offered: BA Education Studies and BA/BSc Psychology in Education.

Services for International Students

The UCL Institute of Education currently have 1,000 international students from over 100 countries enrolled. A meet and greet service is offered for students arriving into Heathrow Airport and a team from the IOE will assist with luggage and transport assistance to your new home. This service also runs during the New Year for January intake.

Orientation days take place for all non-UK students at the start of each year, and will involve information on London, opening a bank account, working in the UK, as well as practical advice on day-to-day living. Pre-sessional English lessons are also available if you need to improve your reading, writing, speaking, listening before your studies.


The UCL Institute of Education tops the league table for education research and continues to impress in a number of different areas. It is ranked first for education in the latest QS world university rankings by subject, while Ofsted – the official body for rating schools - rated its teaching programs as 'outstanding'.

In the latest Research Excellence Framework, the UCL Institute of Education impressed across all subjects and its performance placed it in the top 10 universities in the UK. It is currently ranked first in the UK for research strength.


The main UCL Institute of Education hall of residence is John Adams Hall, which accommodates postgraduate and full-time PGCE students, while full-time undergraduate students are housed in the International Hall, part of the University of London Intercollegiate Halls. All students applying by the August deadline are guaranteed a place and the University are also able to provide accommodation for couples and families in special circumstances.


UCL Institute of Education is based in the centre of London by Russell Square. The area is served by many bus and tube routes, with mains hubs such as Euston and King’s Cross a short walk away. Access to Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick airports is also extremely easy for students flying in from around the world.
