UK universities continue to impress in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023 tables

24 April 2023

The 2023 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject have now been published, with UK universities continuing to impress.

The University of Oxford dominated four of the top 15 subject tables, including Anatomy and Physiology, Anthropology and English language and Literature – while the University of Cambridge dominated Archaeology and Modern Languages.

University College London ranks in the top 10 globally in 10 subject areas, with the Faculty of Education and Society at UCL maintaining its position as first in the world for Education for the tenth year in a row, the first time this has been achieved for any subject.

The 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject evaluates over 1,500 institutions across 54 different subjects, grouped into five faculty areas, and the UK now has more than 1/4 of the world’s top academic departments.

Ben Sowter, QS Senior Vice President, said: “Facing the consequences of Brexit disruption, funding difficulties, and the need to prepare students for success in an ever-evolving employment market, it is not unreasonable to state that the next decade will be a uniquely challenging one for all those involved in British higher education.

“However, the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject provides compelling evidence that the country’s universities are eminently capable of not only navigating these difficulties but also continuing to play a leading role in the global response to the most urgent issues facing humanity".
