Ratan Tata Awarded Honorary Doctorate by the UK’s University of Manchester

Ratan Tata, an eminent industrialist and former chairman of Tata Group, has been awarded an honorary doctorate for his benefaction to innovation and philanthropy. The 82 year old continues to lead the charitable trusts of Tata Group and has been bestowed this award by the University of Manchester in recognition of the fact that they share the same ethos of using innovation and indulging in philanthropy to lead toward the improvement of lives.

Ratan Tata was presented with the award in Mumbai by the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell. Talking about him, she said "He is an example to big business, small enterprise, to researchers and developers, those who give and those who can give more. We believe that he will be an example to our students as they grow to become global citizens.”

According to the university's citations, the Tata group became one of the world’s largest corporations and a leading name under Tata’s leadership from 1991 to 2012. During the period the group acquired some major international brands including Tetley, Daewoo, Jaguar and Land Rover.
