India overtakes China to become the largest nation to receive sponsored UK study visas

26 August 2022

The latest statistics released by the British High Commission show that 118,000 Indian students received a student visa from July 2021 to June 2022, an 89% increase from the previous year.

Compared to 2019, there is a 215% surge in the number of visas granted to Indian students, with increases also taking place in the areas of visitors and skilled workers visas. To date, it is the highest on record since sponsored visas began in 2005.

The news now means that India has overtaken China to become the largest country to receive sponsored study visas from the UK.

Alex Ellis, British High Commissioner to India, said “I’m delighted that Indian nationals were issued the largest number of UK study, work and visitor visas in the year ending June 2022. More strength to the unique living bridge that connects our people.”

On August 12th, 2022, the UK resumed the priority and super priority visa service to help students speed up their visa applications and to cover the significant backlog of visa files in the intervening months since its temporary suspension in March 2022. The record number of visas granted to Indian students shows that enthusiasm to study in the UK is not slowing.
