Glasgow named UK University of the Year 2020

27 November 2020

The University of Glasgow has been awarded the prestigious Times Higher Education 2020 University of the Year title. Glasgow was hailed as a “hugely deserving” University of the Year by the judges recognising the University’s exceptional achievements in the field of higher education.

The University of Glasgow secured this prestigious accolade owing to its strong moral position and significant programmes of reparative justice to redress its historic links to slavelry and making amends.

It has been a great year for this top ranking Scottish university which achieved significant improvements in three other major university rankings this year including The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021 (rising by two places, now ranked 14th in the UK), the Guardian University Guide (moving up two places to 12th position in the UK) and The World University Rankings (moving up seven places to 92nd position overall).

Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, said: “We were the first UK university to recognise our historic links to slavery by researching our past and being open about all that we found. For Glasgow, this initiative has had an immense impact on our institution today – in the way we teach, the way we think of ourselves and how we think about and interpret our history.
