Covid Restriction Lifted in the UK after Omicron Wave Peaked

27 January 2022

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently announced that face masks would no longer be legally required in public places, and Covid-19 passports have also been dropped for large events beginning Jan 27.

Prime Minister Boris further said that international travellers who have been double vaccinated would not need to undergo covid testing on arrival in the near future. The same rules have also been adopted by Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The new Covid guidelines will make travelling easier for international students going to the UK for higher education in 2022.

As per the Minister, government scientists have said that the highly contagious omicron variant “has now peaked nationally.” Moreover, 90% of those over age 60 in the UK have had booster shots. However, those infected are required to self-isolate for five full days though that is to end in the upcoming weeks. The government is planning to treat covid in the post-pandemic period as flu.

Scotland and Wales have also announced a similar easing of restrictions.
