University of Bedfordshire - Luton and Bedford, Bedfordshire
www.beds.ac.uk/   |   Established: 2006   |   Famous for: Journalism ・ Marketing ・ HR

Overview

The University of Bedfordshire is based in both Luton and Bedford, which are the two largest towns in the English county of Bedfordshire. Bedfordshire University was created by the merger of the University of Luton and the Bedford campus of De Montfort University, following approval by the Privy Council.

Bedfordshire University has a growing global reputation. The number of applications to the University has nearly doubled in two years. According to The Times Higher Education, this popularity makes the University of Bedfordshire the most ‘upwardly mobile’ university in the UK.

In the British Government’s recent UK-wide Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, much of Bedfordshire's research was described as 'world-leading' and of 'international significance'. As a consequence of this, the University’s research funding more than doubled.

92 per cent of University of Bedfordshire graduates find work or are in further study within six months of graduation.

Location

Bedfordshire is situated north of London and offers a rich, rural landscape complemented by thriving towns and picturesque villages. Luton and Bedford have been home to university students for many years and therefore offer friendly, welcoming and supportive towns in which to live. London is very close and easy to reach from both the Luton and Bedford campuses, which are on the same train line into London's St. Pancras International station. The journey takes around 40 minutes from Bedford and 22 minutes from Luton on a fast train.

Luton is one of UK's largest towns, and also one of its most diverse; over 140 different nationalities make up this vibrant, multicultural society. By contrast, Bedford is an idyllic riverside town on a beautiful stretch of the River Great Ouse, surrounded by a wealth of parks and open spaces. Close to two major motorways, there are excellent transport links to the rest of the UK, and the rest of Europe can be easily accessed from London Luton and London Stanstead Airports, which are within easy reach.

Campuses

Bedfordshire University has two main campuses: Luton (in the town centre), and Bedford (on Polhill Avenue), both with on campus accommodation. The university also boasts two dedicated campuses for the teaching of nursing and midwifery degrees at Butterfield Park on the outskirts of Luton, and at the Buckinghamshire campus at Oxford House in Aylesbury. The university also has a fifth site, Putteridge Bury, home to the University of Bedfordshire's Knowledge Hub and postgraduate Business School.

Ranking

Bedfordshire is ranked 106th in the Times Good University ranking 2012.

Support for International Students

University of Bedfordshire recognises that international students need help with moving from their home country to studying in the UK. Support begins from the moment you arrive at Heathrow airport, with a free pickup taking you to university campus.
