‘The Raid’ directed by Glamorgan graduate Gareth Evans released today
18 May 2012 09:13

The hit martial-arts action movie, The Raid, written and directed by Glamorgan graduate Gareth Huw Evans, is released today (18 May 2012).

Gareth Evans delivers a talk to students at the University of Glamorgan Evans, originally from Hirwaun in the Cynon Valley, studied on the MA Scriptwriting course at the University of Glamorgan’s Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries before moving to Indonesia to pursue a film career.

His latest film The Raid is a thriller about an elite SWAT team battling to capture a crime lord from a tower block filled with criminals.

The film was written, directed, and produced by Evans on a budget of just over £1m.

The film has received glowing reviews from critics: being described as “like nothing else around” and “an instant cult hit” by the Guardian, who also gave the film a glowing 5-star review, as “a high-octane action film which will leave you breathless” by Metro and “the most exciting action movie of the year”, by Empire.

The Welsh born director gave a talk about the film, and his career, for students at the University on Wednesday 16 May.

Reflecting on his time studying at Glamorgan, Gareth Evans said: “Everything I’ve taken from my course I’ve actually ended up using in my profession. It’s been invaluable to me.”

The Raid won awards at the Toronto Film Festival and the 2012 Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, and was a sold out hit at the Sundance and SXSW Festivals earlier this year.

Professor Richard Hand who taught Gareth said: “We are absolutely delighted that Gareth is enjoying such success as a film director. He was always an extremely hardworking student on the MA Scriptwriting and was really eager to learn and develop the craft of writing and filmmaking and to increase his knowledge of cinema history and theory.”

Trio from Glamorgan take to the stage at the 2012 Hay-on-Wye Festival
18 May 2012 06:48

University of Glamorgan authors Professor Christopher Meredith, Tiffany Murray and Professor Philip Gross are among the stars of the 2012 Hay Festival, which begins on 31 May and runs until 10 June.

Hay-on-Wye Festival 2012 logo Now in its 25th year, the Hay-on-Wye Festival is the highlight of the literary calendar: celebrating prominent writers, filmmakers and musicians.

This year’s event includes appearances by Nobel winning scientist James Watson, actor Stephen Fry and Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman, as well as book readings and talks by authors and famous figures from a range of genres.

Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing, Tiffany Murray , is the Hay Festival International Writing Fellow and Hay will be celebrating her work with five events. On Tuesday 5 June she and feted Norwegian writer Karl Ove Knausgaard will discuss fiction, love, death, and rock n’ roll. On Monday 4 June she will be talking Hay 25 with Andrew Miller, AC Grayling and Rebecca Stott. Tiffany will also be running workshops on reading contemporary literature.

Tiffany is the author of two novels – Happy Accidents and Diamond Star Halo. She has been short listed for the Wodehouse Bollinger Award and the London Book Award, and she is currently adapting Diamond Star Halo for the screen with Owen Sheers.

Listen to Tiffany reading from Diamond Star Halo here.

On Tuesday 5 June, Glamorgan lecturer and author, Professor Christopher Meredith joins poet Robert Minhinnick to talk to former BBC Wales’ Arts and Media correspondent, Jon Gower, about his blackly comic, and highly-acclaimed, fourth novel The Book of Idiots.

Christopher Meredith read at the first ever Hay Festival when he read from his first, then unpublished novel, Shifts. Since then he’s read there numerous times and most recently delivered the Hay University of Glamorgan Lecture to an audience of over 200 in 2010.

You can listen to Christopher reading extracts from his poems from the Black Mountains here.

Finally on Friday 8 June, TS Eliot Prize-winning poet, and Glamorgan lecturer, Professor Philip Gross will discuss his latest collection of poetry, Deep Field.

Deep Field is nominated for Wales Book of the Year Award 2012.

In his nineties Philip Gross’s father, a wartime refugee, began to lose his several languages, first to deafness, then profound aphasia. Deeply thought, as well as deeply felt, these poems reach into that gulf to find him: through recovery of histories both spoken and unspoken as well as an excavation of the spoken word itself.

Watch an interview with Philip, reading from his latest collection, here

The Hay-on-Wye Festival runs from the 31 May to 10 June 2012. For more information, visit the festival’s website.

Building the skills of the financial and professional workforce of the future
14 May 2012 04:45

First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones AM will today, Monday 14th May, launch the University of Glamorgan’s Centre for Financial and Professional Services at an event for the business community in Cardiff Castle.

The new Centre will deliver opportunities for up-skilling the growing sector’s workforce, making Wales an attractive option for inward investment.

First Minister Carwyn Jones speaking at the event

The University’s School of Law, Accounting and Finance has been working closely with the Welsh Government for more than a year to develop new courses and training that will provide the right skills for those entering the workforce. The aim is to meet the demand for skills in sector.

As well as traditional models of study, the Centre and its courses will allow the University to accredit training delivered in-house by companies towards higher education qualifications. This raises the recognisable and transferable skills profile of employees in the financial and professional services sector.

Julie Lydon, Vice-Chancellor of the University said, “Glamorgan’s pedigree as a university founded by business for business makes it unique in Wales, and our major presence in the capital city makes us a natural partner for both the business community and the Welsh Government.

“The launch of the centre for Financial and Professional Services responds to the demand from these key growth industries in the legal, financial and professional services sector. We are providing businesses and workers with a flexible and innovative way of increasing their overall skill base and individual employability. This is good news both for the companies’ bottom line and the Welsh economy as a whole.”

First Minister Carwyn Jones said, “This exciting new centre will provide a major boost to the financial and professional services sector in Wales, a sector that we want to see grow and thrive.

“Wales needs to be attractive to businesses and organisations looking to base their operations here and the opportunities provided by the University of Glamorgan’s new Centre will ensure that we can offer a highly skilled workforce.

“Global Finance brands like Lloyds Banking Group, Legal & General, Admiral, Zurich, HSBC, MoneySupermarket.com, Tesco Finance and Go Compare all have major Head Office support functions here in Wales. They are here because they have found a pool of highly skilled and professionally qualified people. Wales already employs 124,000 skilled professionals in this sector and the aim is to grow this to 200,000 by 2021.”

Courses have been designed in consultation with the Welsh Government’s expert panel, Sector Skills Councils, Professional Bodies (including the CII and CILEx), and individual employers. Where possible, the courses are endorsed by the industry bodies themselves.

Professional recognition of courses ensures that they are both relevant and of the highest quality, nationally and internationally recognised and are portable not only between companies but between countries.

Stuart Popham QC, Vice-Chairman EMEA, Citigroup Global Markets Limited will give the keynote lecture at the opening. He said, “The University of Glamorgan is to be congratulated. The focus of the new Centre is absolutely right. It will go a long way to ensuring we have a properly skilled and trained body of people working in financial and professional services. Wales has a great opportunity to attract more financial and professional companies creating jobs and growth is the supporting economy.”

Note to editors:

The event takes places in Cardiff Castle at 5.30pm
Interviews available by contacting the University’s press office on 01443 483362

Facilities at the new centre include a mock courtroom with state-of-the-art technology where students can hone their advocacy skills in a realistic environment in a courtroom setting.
