Loughborough University has been named the world's best university to study sport (QS World University Rankings) for two years in a row now, but what makes it so special?
The School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough has long been a leader in the UK with a long list of fantastic achievements (unbeaten British Universities and Colleges Sport champions for 37 years running, highest level of student sport volunteering in the country and famous alumni), but its reputation as an internationally recognised centre of excellence is now fully confirmed following its global awards. The QS world ranking is based on surveying academic staff that declares a speciality in the subject, and employers who seek to employ graduates that specialise in the discipline.
Why is Loughborough the best university in the world for sport?
1. High quality research
The Loughborough University Sports Technology Institute is a £15m facility housing the Sports Technology Research Group, whose mission is to have a positive global, social and economic impact on sport through excellent engineering research, teaching and enterprise.
Around 50 academics, research associates, technicians and PhD students carry out wide-ranging research that makes a difference in areas including athletic footwear, technical apparel, protective equipment, balls, bats, clubs, rackets and fitness equipment.
2. World class facilities
Loughborough University is home to the country’s largest concentration of world-class facilities across a wide range of sports. They include an indoor athletics centre and outdoor stadium, sports halls and all-weather pitches, a 50 metre swimming pool, squash, badminton and netball courts, an indoor tennis centre and outdoor courts, and state of the art fitness centres.
This is in addition to the bespoke training and testing facilities, as well as the latest physiological, molecular and environmental technologies, climatic chambers, and laboratory spaces that are also available.
3. Varied subjects
There are a wide variety of undergraduate and postgraduate sports courses available at Loughborough. They include Sport and Exercise Science BSc (Hons)
Sport, Coaching and Physical Education BSc (Hons) and Sport Management BSc (Hons) at undergraduate level, and Exercise Physiology MSc, Sport and Exercise Nutrition MSc and Social Science Research (Sport and Exercise Science) MSc at postgraduate taught level.
After the most recent National Student Survey in 2018, there was 92% 'Overall Satisfaction' in Sports Science courses at the University.
