Overview

The University of Dundee was founded in 1881 and has developed a significant reputation for students entering the traditional professions, most notably law, medicine and dentistry as well as emerging areas such as life sciences. The Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design one of the UK’s top rated art schools, while the University of Dundee School of Medicine is ranked 5th in the UK in the Guardian 2015 University Guide and in the Sunday Times University Guide 2015.

Based in and around the city of Dundee on the central east coast of Scotland, a focus on vocational and professional degrees means that Dundee scores well in terms of graduate employment and only Oxbridge graduates have higher average starting salaries.

Dundee has scored highly in terms of student satisfaction in recent years, coming top of The Times’ survey in 2012 and in the top five in the UK for the most recent International Student Barometer. Lots of degrees at the University include a career planning and internship option, with students given their own personal development website to work within.

Services for International Students

The University of Dundee can meet international students upon arrival at Edinburgh airport, while arrival packs are also given out which answer a number of questions about settling in to your new surroundings. Events are arranged throughout the year with international students in mind, while the International Advice Service provide help and support across a range of topics – including visa issues – throughout the year.

Pre-sessional English courses, as well as free English language lessons for international students, are available and cover academic writing, seminar skills and listening and note-taking.

The University's Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design is ranked among the top three art schools in the UK. The Times Higher Education Supplement 2014 ranked the University of Dundee amongst the world’s top 200 universities, and the best in Scotland for student experience due to its facilities, accommodation and student activities. The subjects of anatomy and physiology, dentistry and social work all feature in the top ten subject rankings in the UK.

The University of Dundee’s School of Medicine is ranked 5th in the UK in the Guardian 2015 University Guide and in the Sunday Times University Guide 2015, while the University of Dundee’s School of Dentistry is ranked 1st in the UK in the Guardian 2015 rankings.

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, Dundee recorded the highest level of 4-star, or 'world-leading', research in the Biological Sciences of any university in the UK.

Accommodation

Accommodation is guaranteed to all students who apply by the deadline, with four halls on or near the main campus. There are also University owned flats in the city which have been built or refurbished within the last ten years. The Accommodation office can assist students with finding private accommodation.

Location

Dundee is the fourth-largest city in Scotland, and lies on the east coast of the country on the River Tay, surrounded by hills and farmland. It has some of the lowest living costs for students in the UK, being 14% cheaper than the UK average. It is also Scotland’s sunniest city.

Dundee airport fly direct routes into London City airport for those wishing to connect from either Heathrow or Gatwick, while other Scottish airports such as Glasgow, Edinburgh or Aberdeen offer international destinations as well.
