Royal Holloway, University of London is a member of the University of London. The university, originally an all-women establishment called Royal Holloway College, was founded by Thomas Holloway in 1879 and opened by Queen Victoria in 1886. The campus is one of the most beautiful in the UK and is located just 30 minutes from the centre of London.
Royal Holloway is particularly strong in arts and humanities, with French, German, Geology and Music all being awarded five-star ratings by The Times in the 2008 Research Assessment Guide. The Music department is the highest rated of any UK university.
Royal Holloway was ranked in the top 30 universities in the country by The Complete University Guide (30th) and The Times Good University Guide (28th) for 2014. The Times Higher Education World Rankings also rated Royal Holloway 36th in Europe and 102nd in the world, placing it amongst the top 1% worldwide.
